The Mixed Ability Class Print
by Julie Tice

Richmond Publishing 1997

8429449272

From analysing the anatomy of a mixed ability class to solving the problems, The Mixed Ability Class is useful and informative. The map of the book gives an extremely clear and accessible introduction to dealing with the all-toocommon problems posed by these classes.

Part A provides guidance in Classroom Management, Motivating Students, Catering for Different Types of Learner and Learner Training. But the emphasis is on providing strategies to tackle students’ difficulties and this is extremely well-handled. Many activities are the tried and tested tasks of the everyday classroom, but there are others which are new and highly inventive and which would also be of interest to teachers of equal ability classes. The section on Catering for Different Types of Learner is a fascinating insight into varying learning styles and preferences, with practical suggestions on adapting activities to cater for these different styles.

The inclusion of tasks in each chapter encourages teachers to focus on the needs of their students and will certainly be of interest to teacher trainers. The section at the end on Solving Problems deals with common difficulties experienced by teachers of mixed ability classes and gives chapter references for advice on how to tackle them.

This book is very user-friendly, clearly set-out and extremely accessible. There are some excellent photocopiable pages and a list of suggested titles for further reading. All in all, this book will be a very practical and interesting addition to any staffroom shelf.
