Mystery definitions Print
Write up the following text on the board and ask the class what they think it refers to:

Some were short and others tall, and each complemented the others. Some stood alone, but most worked in groups. All were outspoken in varying degrees. A few had to be silenced, but later they combined to make a point. However, without access to all of them, I’d be truly lost for words.

The answer of course is ‘the letters of the alphabet’. You can make it slightly easier by writing in the present tense and if students are stuck, you can tell them there are 26 in English.

Invite students to compose their own mystery definitions – it’s good language practice and it’s fun both for composers and guessers.
